{Party's address}
Dear Madam,
Dear Sir,
In order to better inform its members, Greenpeace traditionally sends a questionnaire to Quebec's main political parties during each electoral campaign. According to the most recent polls, the environment ranks first among the concerns of the Quebecois, so now is an ideal time for continuing this tradition.
Greenpeace believes that the next general election will be crucially important in that it could give Quebec the opportunity to assume a leading role in environmental matters on the international scene. It is urgent that action be taken on climate change, and we want to know how our political parties are going to respond to this threat. Our forest must be better protected, and it is vital to implement ecosystem-based forest management. With that in mind, we would like to know what solutions the campaigning parties are offering to the electors. One of the government's duties is to provide adequate information about the food ingested by the population, so who is going to propose legislation requiring the labelling of food containing GMOs? Who is going to finally allow the province of Quebec to export its non-GMO-labelled products to markets where, more and more, GE food is banned, particularly in Europe? Such qualifying labels would certainly give the province an edge over its North American competitors. And which party is going to suggest the most promising solutions for sustainable transportation and agriculture, clean and renewable energies, and the development of wind energy?
The questions that we ask are about vital issues that will certainly affect the quality of life of the citizens of Quebec in the short, middle and long run. So you are invited to read them carefully, thinking about the general background surrounding the issues involved. Make your choice by simply circling the letter corresponding to the answer you choose.
For each question you may want to send a comment to our members. Please send your answers either by mail before Friday, March 9 at 5:00 P.M. to the Greenpeace office (454 Laurier East, Montreal, Quebec, H2J 1E7), or by e-mail to jocelyn.desjardins@yto.greenpeace.org. Please notice that our team will grade each party according to a methodology that you will find readily on our Internet site: (takeaction.greenpeace.ca/quebec-elections07/).
Thank you in advance for your collaboration. Your responses will improve the political knowledge of the 30,000 Greenpeace members living Quebec. Indeed, we will publish the answers you send us as well as the grade Greenpeace will attribute to your political party on our site and in our news bulletin (to be distributed only a couple of days before the date of the election).
Sincerely yours,
Steven Guilbeault
Greenpeace director for Quebec
